Wednesday 5 August
Morning: The
Great Alderney Week Fun Run – sponsored by the Alderney Rotary Club
Odd Spot Competition
And
then they were off: 156 competitors of all ages took part in this popular running
event which is growing bigger every year and which encompassed several
categories of races: a 2 mile, a 5K and a 10K course. Organised by
Belinda Powrie and friends, and sponsored by the Alderney Rotary Club whose
members helped to marshal the race, this was declared a great success by all
who took part. And of course, there were record-breaking winners.

Afternoon: Sandcastle
Competition – sponsored by Braye Beach Hotel
Beach Boules – Sponsored by the Shales Family – sorry, no photos yet
Private Film Screening of “Around the World in 80 Days”
Pony Rides
The champions of this
year’s Beach Boules Competition were:
James Hardy (1st),
Ellis Downes (2nd) Ned Densham (3rd) and Clive Fisher
(4th).
One
of the most popular family events of Alderney Week is the Sandcastle
Competition – or should it be renamed Sand Sculpture Competition?
Competitors
were divided into 5 classes: the under 5’s who had just 30 minutes to impress
the judges, 6 to 8 year olds with 45 minutes to sculpt, the 9 to 11’s with an
hour from start to finish, 12 to 14 year olds with 90 minutes on the clock
and, finally, the highly competitive groups and families class which had 2
hours to dig and sculpt for enviable golden glory.
“This
year’s “Around the World” theme lent itself to imaginative interpretation and
iconic images of far-off lands soon started to emerge” reported Peter
Annereau for the Alderney Press. “Among the highlights were the Sydney
Opera House, pyramids, a Buddha, a camel, the Taj Mahal, numerous balloons
and a map of the world measuring more than 30 ft across and requiring the
excavation of tonnes of sand. There were also many humorous entries
including “Fogg lands on Alderney” and highly detailed entries such as
Jocelyn Edmonds’ and Marsh Connor’s castle, much worked with artist’s palette
knife, and another with a train on a figure-of-eight track. The judges who
had a hard task, picked most of the above for awards, but their overall
winner was not on the world theme but as a reaction to Alderney Week itself,
which chimed with most people’s sentiments: “Give Alderney a Big Hand” ,
created by the Hanrahan group, it was jus that.” (extracted from Peter
Annereau’s report published in the Alderney Press Issue No. 33)
The
winners in the respective competition classes were:

Evening:
Juggling Workshop
Gala Spectacular “Round the World” with the Alderney Blowers and a
big star-studded cast of performers – Sponsored by Project
Management Alderney, Henry Klausner of Affinity Ltd
The
fantastic backdrop designed and sponsored by John Diebel and family and
featuring the most famous landmarks of the world, set the scene for the
“Round the World” Gala Spectacular, which started off with an hour of great
music by Alderney’s adopted brass band, the Alderney Blowers, all sporting
weird and wonderful international costumes. The Alderney Blowers
have entertained us for over 20 years and are part of the Alderney Week
family.
Ronnie,
Lee and Alex produced yet another smashing show taking the audience up, up
and away around the world in just 8 days, with songs and sketches that had
everybody roaring with laughter and a line up of talent who had very little
time to rehearse. It’s amateur entertainment at its very best . “Ronnie
promised a spectacular night and none of the hundreds who attended were
disappointed”, reported James Varley, editor of the Alderney Journal. “The
sketches, humour and downright silliness tickled everybody in the crowd,
whether they were visitors or islanders. Congratulations to everyone who was
involved – a great night was had by all” (extracted from Issue No. 926 of
the Alderney Journal).
The
show’s accomplished Masters of Ceremony – Andrée Gaydon-Smith and Robin
Whicker introduced the stars and acts and provided the audience with valuable
inside information. Some of the photos published here also show you what
happens behind the scenes as the luvvies prepare for their big entry:
“Around
the World” was followed by Bina’s Turkish Tribal Belly Dancers , “La Cage aux
Folles”, Hank & Billy, Cookie the Fortune Dragon, Channel Islands in the
Stream (you know the tune, we’ve changed the lyrics to make more sense),
Sound of Musak (40 years later) , Aqua Marina, Bugsy Malone starring St.
Anne’s School’s pupils, the Sumo Wrestlers, the Sand Boys, Halleluja,
Landmarks of the World, East Side Story, The Three Gondoliers, My Fair Lady
(and she is a real star. Rosie Evans performed as the leading lady of “My
Fair Lady at the Brighton Royal Theatre in June 2009), and concluded
with the “Up, Up and Away” Finale.
What
a Show!
