The Great Aurigny Duck Race and the Aurigny Man-Powered Flight

Demand for those high speed yellow plastic ducks racing in this year’s Great Aurigny Duck Race was high.  £5 for your own individually numbered bath tub favourite and, if yours was first to paddle across the Inner Harbour, you secured 4 return air tickets between Alderney and Southampton. This year, the winning duck was Number 137.

The Dive-for-a-Plate Contest made a welcome return and, while the competition proved a touch daunting for some youngsters.

And the ever popular and revitalised Man-Powered Flight did not disappoint a 1,000-strong audience with highly imaginative entries each one piloted by a copper-bottomed super star in keeping with the Alderney Week theme and vying for big prizes for best designed flying machines and costumes.

Lodging yourself off a ramp 25-ft above the sea in an attempt to defy gravity is not everybody’s cup of soup but, hey, this is Alderney Week. And they were off to a flying start: Wilburtross, the Raging Rabbits, The Flying Wand, Ali Babua, The Hoff’s Flying Machine, Pure Magic, Gene Genies, Alderney Quidditch Team, And for My Next Trick, Flight of Igarus, The Tooth Fairies, Indiana Jones and The Temple  of Doom, Led Zeppelins, Aero, Bed Knobs and Broom Sticks, Red Bull, Aeros, Over the Rainbow, Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, Tommy Cooper’s Flying Squirrel, Mad Roo Airlines, IT Girls. What a spectacle!

The pilots and cabin crew were super stars all, but there have to be winners.

Best Overall  entry: “Indiana Jones”.

Best Youngster (under 18): Bed Knobs and Broom Sticks

Best Theme: Gene Genies

Best Original: Tommy Cooper

Best Flying Machine – and winner of the £100 prize: Wilburtross

Alderney’s Got Talent

Organised for the second year by Wendy Hamon and Pat Swift, this show proved how much talent there’s on this little island and who would have wanted to be in the judges’ shoes as the young pop stars, ballet dancers, musicians and entertainers took to the stage. But, as with so many competitions, there can only ever be one Overall Winner and this year 10-year old Alice Flowers took the title, trophy and prizes. But there were also winners in the different age groups were:

Evening:

  • Alderney’s Got Talent”  Show for the under 16
  • The Alderney Blowers’ Open Air Concert, this time in Victoria Street
  • Spooks Walk through the streets of St. Anne
  • Pirates Disco at the Old Barn

First ever Street Concert

Logistics proved quite a problem when it came to setting up the island’s first ever Street Concert in Victoria Street. How do you get a marquee from the Butes down to Lower Victoria Street? With great difficulty -  and a little help from the 30 Signal Regiment.

Finding enough chairs for a vast audience proved another difficulty and with just 300 chairs available, there was standing room only. But it was more than worth it and the overall effect was spectacular. The Alderney Blowers delighted everybody with their ever increasing repertoire and even got people dancing in the street.  The acoustics were perfect and one of the highlights of this memorable evening was a guest appearance by 18-year old Rosie Evans whose beautiful voice enchanted everybody.  Rosie was the winner of the following day’s X-Factor Show.
