Day Four: Tuesday 5 August
Morning:
Pedal Kart Grand Prix and Sprint Speed and quick manoeuvring were essential to beat your fellow competitors in the fastest pedal kart race of the Channel Islands which this year was sponsored by Sportingbet. At short notice, the race track had to be relocated to The Banquage. But this proved as tricky to negotiate with these latest state-of-the-art racing cars as last year’s course at the Cuttings. Some racers tried to cut corners or push their competitors off course and were promptly shown a yellow card, but not disqualified.
As speeds increased during the final qualifying races, the scoring team had real trouble keeping up with the results.World racing champion Andy Priaulx whose autographed poster and baseball cap were a special prize for the winner, would have been truly impressed!
Fastest in the age group 12-17 was Ed Roberts. Fastest racer in the 18-25 group was Philip Hanrohan. The media race (Channel Television, Alderney Journal, BBC Spotlight and Miss Alderney racing on behalf of the Alderney Press) was won by James Varley, editor of the Alderney Journal.
The fastest lady of the day turned out to be former Miss Alderney Lisa Bunn. Fastest Veteran racer was Martin Wright.
But the fastest time of the day during the final heat was clocked by Mike Timby with 1.15.47 who claimed the trophy as well as the ‘Karel’s Challenge’ Cup, a special award presented to Mike by Karel Weijand’s widow Sheila. Karel Weijand who tragically died just a few weeks before the start of Alderney Week, was a great supporter of the Pedal Kart Races and wanted to donate this special trophy which will be presented annually to the fastest driver of this highly popular event.
Afternoon:
Glass-bottom Kayaking at Douglas Quay, organised by the Alderney Wildlife Trust proved very popular, but due to the limited number of kayaks available, was repeated later during Alderney Week. A great way of spotting life under water and the odd wreck.
Getting spooked on the Magic Warthogs’ Express : Cleverly disguised beyond recognition by the pupils of St. Anne’s School, the Alderney Railway had become the famous Warthogs’ Express. Half way through the journey to the quarry, passengers found themselves spooked by rather nasty creatures not dissimilar to those encountered and constantly fought off by Harry Potter.
In fact, Parry Hotter and his friends were there to defend the innocent travellers , casting spells on the spooks to protect the innocent travellers who, as soon as they had arrived at the destination, found themselves being selected for the Squidditch tournaments.
This ferocious game required the players to pass the ball through a hoop while riding and holding on to their broomsticks.
Needless to say, this proved a very successful event and anybody who was unable to take the first train, could hop on the Warthogs’ Express that Thursday to experience the magic of Parry Hotter. The Magic Warthogs’ Express was sponsored by Geomarine Limited.
Evening:
Glyndebourne comes to Alderney Later that evening, we were able to catch up with Shakespeare as the Rain or Shine Theatre Company performed their very own interpretation of “The Winter’s Tale” in the gardens of the Island Hall. A great evening of cultural entertainment. The Rain or Shine Theatre Company is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and will be back again next year with another Shakespeare play. Both performances (Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 August) were sponsored by Century Accounting Limited.
