ALDERNEY WEEK DAY 7: SANDCASTLE COMPETITION

The 400 or so people – young and not so young – on Braye Beach this afternoon (Friday) for the ever popular Alderney Week Sandcastle Competition are happy testament that bucket and spade holiday-making is still very much alive and digging.

Sandcastlers were divided into 5 classes: the under 5’s who had just 30 minutes to impress the judges, 6 to 8 year olds with 45 minutes to sculpt, the 9 to 11’s with an hour from start to finish, 12 to 14 year olds with 90 minutes on the clock and, finally, the highly competitive groups and families class which had 2 hours to dig and sculpt for enviable golden glory.

Works inspired by the Alderney Week theme  “Hollywood” featured highly with several fanciful Little Mermaid, Marilyn Monroe, Herbie and Jaws creations gracefully carved alongside the many more traditional turreted castles.

There were medals and prizes for every junior builder and, in the groups and families class where competition was fierce, the hard-pressed judges awarded three equal 2nd place spots, to “Free Willy”, “King Kong”, and Marilyn Monroe in “Some Like it Hot”.

First place in the senior section and best overall champion was ET, cleverly created without any artificial props, by the Alderney-based Stalking Horse Group.

The “Alderney’s got Talent” Show, bigger and better than ever, proved that Alderney really does have talent. And the “X-Factor Show” was a great hit with the audience, as were the famous judges.

The “Alderney’s got Talent” Show was divided into three age groups and below are the winners:

GROUP ONE:  Age 5 - 8

1st - Serita McKinley & Bryony Hulbert both 8yrs old did a dance routine.

2nd - Katie Clark age 7 sang a medley of songs.

3rd - Megan, Alice and  Eleanor  Age 7,8 & 9 yrs who did a dance routine to “Shine” by Take That.

GROUP TWO:  Age 9-12

1st - Hannah Williams age 11 played the clarinet.

2nd - Christie O'Connell age 9 sang unaccompanied to “Every time we touch”.

3rd - Fraser Hulbert age 10 played the piano.

GROUP THREE:  Age 13-15

1st - Rosie Hulbert age 15 sang  “All that Jazz” from Chicago.

2nd - Leo Diebel & Chloe Simpkins both 14yrs old sang “Come what may” from Moulin Rouge.

3rd - Carl Rennie age 14 played the clarinet.

OVERALL OSCAR WINNER was:

Thea Simpkins, aged 12, sang “On my own” from Les Miserables

X-Factor Show

Then it was time for the older wannabes to take over the stage as the fearsome trio of judges, nasty Simon Cowell, softy Louis Walsh and sexy, purry pussycat Sharon Osborne took their seats at the panel. Compere was slick and smooth Lee Flewitt who put the contestants at ease and tried to sell their talents to the judges.

There were some amazing star quality performances and it was Alderney that the Spice Girls chose for their first venue of their come-back world tour. They’d put on a few years and a few pounds and wrinkles and sadly Posh Spice had to stay behind in L.A. to look after Golden Balls (just making sure he wasn’t playing away!). But with or without Posh Spice, these ladies were clearly past their sell-by date and their agent should be fired!

The real stars of the show were:

Lily Diebel – song:  “If I ain’t got you”; Jo Woodnutt - song “Sway”; Dennis and Jane Hill with their swing and boogie woogie dance routine to “In the Mood”, Rosie Hulbert – song: “Because you loved me”; Andrey Balryk with his Russian song “Kalinka Malinka”; Vicky Young – song: “Valerie”; the outrageous “Team V” with a sing and dance routine to “Do your thing”; Hollie Roberts – song: “Feeling good”; Enrique’s Angels  with their live music performance of “Hero”; Giorgi Collier – song “Don’t speak”; and Becky Gaydon – song: “There’s a hero”. And, while the judges were deliberating, the audience was treated to a quick history sketch of Henry VIII – which was far more interesting and entertaining than any history lesson and makes you understand why Henry VIII simply had to kill his wives.

And the winner of this year’s Alderney X-Factor Show was  Andray Baluyk from Belarus who received a standing ovation and won the Oscar. Andray has been coming to Alderney for many years for a healthy break to recover from the Chernobyl disaster. His voice and performance were simply outstanding and we hope he’ll be back next year.
