THE SEARCH IS OVER FOR MISS ALDERNEY 2009 Candidates for the 2009 Miss Alderney contest included four very pretty young ladies - Hannah Cox, Stephanie Caceres, Katie Le Poullain and Sarah Pepper - who were interviewed by the judges Jennifer, Sheila, Clive and Richard before being introduced to the audience on stage during a fun interview with chat show host Ronnie Cairnduff.
The low number of entrants was surprising and somewhat disappointing, and is was most distressing for judges Jennifer, Sheila, Clive and Richard that only three of the four lovely ladies could be winners.
Miss Alderney 2009 is Hannah Cox, who will be 17 in July. Hannah who is one of Alderney’s most promising young chefs, was elected at Saturday night’s (23 May) Miss Alderney Disco.
Currently working as a trainee chef at the newly refurbished Jack’s Brasserie (formerly known as Gannets), she lists as her hobbies “socialising, running and, of course, cooking”. Hannah is very much looking forward to represent her island during Alderney Week, at the Fete de la Madeleine of Alderney’s French twinning town Beaumont-Hague and at the Jersey Battle of Flowers and Moonshine Parade. Her favourite Alderney Week events are the Daft Raft Race and the Man of Iron competition.
Maid of Honour, 24-year old Sarah Pepper a postal clerk at the islands’ post office, likes travelling, walking, ice-skating, writing, dancing, music, photography and dog walking . Her favourite Alderney Week event is the Cavalcade and Gala Night – not forgetting the Canine Capers and Companion Dog Show where her King Charles Spaniel scooped the prizes last year.
Maid of Honour, 18-year old Katie Le Poullain who is at Guernsey Grammar and is concentrating on biology, psychology and business studies but hopes to read dental hygiene and therapy at university. Her hobbies include swimming, socialising and, yes, roller-blading.
The charming trio is guaranteed to have a wonderful year of fun, fame and glamour.
What it takes to become Miss Alderney
Contestants must be 17 years of age on the 1st day of Alderney Week (1 August), be single, live on the island and be here throughout Alderney Week. Good looks are important, as is an outgoing personality, enthusiasm and commitment to be a good ambassadress for her island. Together with her Maids of Honour and their friends and family, they are expected to enter a float for the Cavalcade. For the past ten years or more, the Miss Alderney Float has always claimed the trophy for Best Overall.
As to the duties of Miss Alderney and Her Maids of Honour, the winning trio will be required to attend a considerable number of Alderney Week events to present prizes, starting on Saturday morning with the town crier’s competition, and later that date at the Triathlon, the Little Miss and Master Alderney contest and that night’s election of Mister Alderney 2009.
On Sunday 2 August they will attend the official Alderney Week Church Service and later that afternoon, they will crown Little Holiday Prince and Little Miss Holiday Princess. On Cavalcade Day, after the Cavalcade has arrived on the Butes, they will act as hosts to visiting Carnival Queens from Guernsey, Jersey and Beaumont-Hague and, on the last night of Alderney Week, they will lead the Torchlight Procession. And if you take a look at the photographs of Alderney Week 2008 which are published on this website, you’ll find Miss Alderney and her Maids of Honour making frequent appearances throughout Alderney Week and are clearly enjoying every moment.
The following week, Miss Alderney will represent her island at the Jersey Battle of Flowers and the fantastic Moonshine Parade (13 & 14 August). But before that, on Sunday 19 July, Miss Alderney and her two Maids of Honour will be hopping over to Beaumont-Hague to take part in the Carnival parade of Alderney’s French twinning town.
That’s all it takes and the successful candidates are guaranteed a fabulous season of glamour and fun. Any previous Miss Alderney or Maid of Honour is most welcome to present herself again. There have been many occasions when the same young lady has held the title in different years, as can be seen on the “Miss Alderney Walk of Fame” page on this website.
Great prizes: In addition to being awarded the trophy, Miss Alderney received a £350 cash prize plus a £250 contribution towards her float, a 2-night break at the fabulous ”Royal Yacht” luxury hotel for two in Jersey, where she will represent her island at the Jersey Battle of Flowers parades and the Moonshine Parade (13 & 14 August), a day return with lunch in Guernsey, a basket of Elizabeth Arden cosmetics worth over £150 from the Alderney Pharmacy, a free hairdo by Michaela and a manicure at Eden. On Sunday 23 July, Miss Alderney and her Maids of Honour, will be taken to our French twinning town of Beaumont-Hague to take part in the parade. She will be making numerous appearances during Alderney Week presenting prizes and attending events and is guaranteed to have a fab time, as will the two runners-up, her Maids of Honour.
The Maids of Honour each received £200 cash, a daytrip to Guernsey with lunch, a day-trip to Beaumont-Hague and a free hairdo at the Vanity Box.
All three ladies were also be presented with a bouquet of flowers, a bottle of champagne, chocolates and they will get to keep their tiaras and sashes.

60 years of Island History through the Eyes of Miss Alderney 1948—2008 now a feature film [img]dvd[img]
Last year many of the former Miss Alderneys joined us at a special celebration cocktail party on Saturday 2 August to celebrate 60 years of beautiful girls. The event was recorded by the film company Centre Media whose executive producer Kent Walwin was able to extract some great memories and facts during his interviews with these lovely ladies. The film –now available in DVD format – tells the tale of Alderney Week and, in particular, the Miss Alderney competition, which started in 1948 after the islanders, who had been evacuated during World War II, were at last able to return to their beloved Alderney. The DVD is available for £4 from Alderney Week PO Box 138, Alderney GY9 3HF.
