CASINO NIGHT – A FUN FUND-RAISER
Fundraising can be fun! And that’s precisely why the Rotary Club of Alderney and the Alderney Week Team organised a Casino Night on Friday 23 July at the Island Hall, with BlackJack, Roulette, Crown and Anchor and fun auctions. And the Bunny girls were there to ensure there was not a dry glass in the house.
Miss Alderney 2010 loves all creatures great and small
Miss Alderney 2010 is 18-year old Joanna ( Jo for short, and JoJo to her friends) Woodnutt. Jo who is currently studying Chemistry, Physics, Biology and English Literature at The Ladies’ College, Guernsey, ultimately wants to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and has an offer to go to Nottingham University . Asked why she wanted to be Miss Alderney, Jo said: “I’ve always wanted to be Miss Alderney, all through my childhood! I think I can be a perfect ambassadress for Alderney: “I like people and I’m chatty, and I have loved my childhood in Alderney. I think Alderney has a lot more to offer than people think. I want to have a chance to show everybody this beautiful island as I see it”. Her response to the important attributes Miss Alderney should have, was: “I think above all, Miss Alderney should be friendly . Younger children should be able to look up to her, and adults should be able to communicate with her. She should be polite, punctual and smart and with a cheerful manner.” And that’s exactly what the judges were looking for. Jo even declined the tempting offer of a royal transport on Cavalcade Day in a chauffeur-driven convertible vintage Bentley. “I want to build a float “, said Jo. “ I think it is an important tradition that should not be changed.” She plays clarinet, grade 8, loves singing, music and amateur dramatics and is very much looking forward to Alderney Week and her guest appearance at this year’s Jersey Battle of Flowers. Her Maid of Honour is 20-year old Hannah Osborne whose mother Candy, nee Clotworthy, was a Maid of Honour in 1975 and was Miss Alderney the following year.
Hannah, who is now working as a PA in a Guernsey finance company, lists acting, cinema, reading, travelling and being with family and friends as her main hobbies. Both young ladies will have a busy diary of appearances throughout Alderney Week which starts on 30 July and ends on 8 August.
